UNO Privateers Abroad Scholarship Fund

Our Goal!

The University of New Orleans (UNO) Division of International Education needs your help to send students to Kyoto, Japan on the UNO-Japan: Study at Doshisha University summer study abroad program. Every summer since 2009, students participate in studies about Japanese History, Philosophy, Language, Film, and more. They learn from experienced faculty and staff who shepherd them on a journey of learning and discovery. Students are also partnered with local Japanese students who provide that invaluable connection to "real life" in Japan - which in turn leads to deeper cultural learning and understanding that just cannot be achieved otherwise. The program takes place in country from May 27 to June 30, 2018.

Our goal for our 10th anniversary program is to raise $10,000 in scholarship funding that will help defray the costs for students most in need of financial assistance. The funding we collect will assist students with such expenses as tuition and fees, instructional materials, housing, meals, and additional travel.

What is the UNO Privateers Abroad Scholarship?

Since 1973, UNO has taken pride in its high-quality study abroad programs.  Although we offer some of the nation's most affordable study abroad options, it is still more expensive than staying home in New Orleans. And our hard-working UNO students repeatedly have difficulty making ends meet even with various funding sources. Therefore, the UNO Privateers Abroad Scholarship Fund was established to provide a base for funding that is solely dedicated to assisting UNO students in participating in our internationally recognized programs.

Why are we fundraising for UNO-Japan students now?

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the UNO-Japan program, so we have decided to kick off this campaign with fundraising to help students attend UNO's youngest study abroad program and our only program in Asia. In the near future, we intend to broaden the Privateers Abroad Scholarship Fund by fundraising for each of the other study abroad programs. UNO students are hard-working students who not only cobble together federal financial aid and their own earnings to pay for their education, but they also apply for multiple scholarships offered by various sources. It is these additional resources that can make the difference between whether a student is able to participate or not. With your donation, you can help make this happen!

Did you know?

Studying abroad - even for a short period of time - is a transformative experience that impacts students' lives in so many different aspects that can be difficult to quantify. Recently, research has been done to track what those impacts can be. Below are some findings put out by the University of California.

  • 97% of study abroad students found employment within 12 months of graduation, when only 49% of college graduates found employment in the same period. That means they were twice as likely to find a job.

  • 25% higher starting salaries: that's how much more study abroad students earn than those college graduates who do not study abroad.  Another study found their study abroad graduates out-earned their peers by 17%.

  • 90% of study abroad alumni who applied got into their 1st or 2nd choice grad school.

  • 84% of study abroad alumni felt their studies abroad helped them build valuable skills for the job market.

  • 59% of employers said study abroad would be valuable in an individual’s career later on with their organization.

  • A British study found the greatest increases in salary earnings among study abroad alumni (compared to their peers) among seven majors: sociology, computer science, theology and religious studies, electronic and electrical engineering, and physical geographical sciences.

  • 96% of study abroad alumni claimed an increase in self-confidence attributed to study abroad.
